Mayor Muriel Bowser's 2021 Accountability Report

Cover of Accountability Report 2021

2020 was a year like no other. As a pandemic swept the globe and Americans reckoned with injustices as old as our nation, we also witnessed, time and time again, the resiliency and compassion of our community.

Through everything, Washingtonians stood shoulder to shoulder. Across all eight wards, we stayed home to flatten the curve. Health care workers responded with courage. Neighbors delivered meals to homebound seniors. Grocery store employees worked long hours stocking shelves. We turned firehouses into testing sites and built a free testing system that is second to none. In the midst of it all, we stood together to send a clear message to the world that Black Lives Matter. And, after decades of advocacy, we moved closer to DC statehood than ever before.

I have said throughout this pandemic that we are all in this together and that we will get through it together. In 2021, we will recover together.

Already, thousands of Washingtonians have received a safe and effective vaccine. In the coming weeks and months, thousands more will get vaccinated. And slowly but surely, we will come back together.

In 2021, we will get our young people back in the classroom with their teachers and peers. Washingtonians will go back to work, and small businesses will welcome back customers. Together, we will continue the work that never really stopped – the work to build healthy and inclusive communities across all eight wards.

One thing I know about Washington, DC is that we are a city that knows how to rise to a challenge. And while our collective comeback is just getting started, I know that if we stick together, we will come out of this a stronger, more equitable, and more resilient Washington, DC. I am honored to be your mayor during this most unprecedented time, and I look forward to the work ahead.t the globe and Americans reckoned with injustices as old as our nation, we also witnessed, time and time again, the resiliency and compassion of our community.
